SEEKING PEACE AND CONTENTMENT IN LIFE There is within the heart of most people a desire for safety, freedom of thought, and opportunity to succeed in desired endeavors they may attempt. This is not just some utopian ideal; this is the desire of most people in the world. As we look about us we must make constant decisions about events and privileges extended to us in this life, those opportunities and privileges may be good for us or they may be bad for us_[1]_ (aoldb://mail/write/template.htm#_ftn1) . I Say, good or bad, understanding that there are different ideals about what is good and what is bad. Even thought there are differing views about determining good or bad we must make decisions regularly that affect our life and the life of others in many situations. Because we live in a world that is in constant change (I.e., moral. ethical. spiritual, etc.), we must be careful that we do not create problems for ourselves that we cannot undo. For instance, there are things that I may choose to put into my body (I.e., illegal drugs, alcoholic beverages, etc), that will shorten my life and perhaps cause me to become involved in the maiming or death of someone who is innocent. Indeed, I may make a choice to put things into my body that may damage me and might cause me to unwillingly maim or kill someone else. You see, the choices we make may affect me as an individual but the peripheral damage that my choices cause others may be inexcusable. The secular law may convict a person of a felonious crime because he/she unwittingly harmed another person or persons because of their bad choice to put a mind altering substance inside their body. A PERSON MAY OR MAY NOT CONTRIBUTE TO PEACE AND CONTINTMENT Because we all have free moral agency it is our choice to do whatever we want to do, even to breaking laws that we know will cause us loss of freedom if we violate them. There are many people who practice many forms of law violation daily, yet they care not that they are in violation of law, both of man and of God. The lifestyle and choices each person makes in life is governed by their view of God, of His Book (I.e., the Bible), of Christ, of their fellow man (I.e., their neighbor), of marriage, of faithfulness to vows, etc._[2]_ (aoldb://mail/write/template.htm#_ftn2) consequently, whatever one believes in life, their environment, and influences will mold them into one of two totally different personalities. If a person believes in God that person will develop Biblical guided moral, ethical, and spiritual values (I.e., generally speaking - there are always exceptions to any given norm) but, on the other hand if one does not know about God or does not care to acquaint himself with God that person will develop qualities that are not like the person that does believe in God._[3]_ (aoldb://mail/write/template.htm#_ftn3) The person that cares not for God, regardless of their reasons will become problems in society, that person will not regard morals, ethics, and spirituality (I.e., based on God?s Word) of any value. In our lifetime, we have witnessed the results of a society in America that has turned from public acknowledgement of God, to attempts at eliminating the knowledge of God as a public policy. This philosophy, (I.e., the eliminating of God or any acknowledgement of God) is at the root of many problems in society today (Examples - increase in teen and pre-teen sex and sex orientations, increase in drug related crimes and consequence {drunken driving, suicides, etc}, infants being born with physical and mental handicap?s because of parental use of non-prescribed medications, abuse of their body, and alcoholic beverages, etc.). These by-products of Godless orientations are destroying those that practice them and are bringing secondary damages to those that are close to or involved with them in any way. EVERYONE AFFECTS SOMEONE ELSE BY THEIR LIFE STYLE We know that our actions, both public and private will affect someone else. Our actions will either benefit others (I.e., help others to achieve a better life) or our actions will corrupt others (I.e., make others worse off in their life and relationship with God). We must see this fact; no other description that one may find of personal action and reaction for displaying our lifestyle and allegiances in life._[4]_ (aoldb://mail/write/template.htm#_ftn4) No person can live for either the devil or for God and not affect other people by their decisions and their lifestyle (I.e., their choice). We cannot live life in an invisible state nor can we live life so that no one in the realm of our influence is affected. Indeed, I must, because of others, seek to find the best life that I can live so that I will benefit but also so that everyone in the realm of my influence will benefit from having interacted with me (Matt 5:13-16 {Christians Are Salt and Light} -- > "13 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. > 14 you are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. > 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. > 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.? (NKJV) In consequence of these facts it is apparent that the most productive and helpful life to others that one may live is a life of faithfulness to God. COULD I REALLY HAVE THAT MUCH INFLUENCE WITH OTHERS Yes, Example, Matthew 5:16, ?Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.? God has revealed to the Christian that our ability to influence other people to do good things while we are serving him faithfully is evident in many places, Please note the following references: 2 Timothy 1:5, ?when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also? (NKJV). 2 Thessalonians 3:7-9, 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; 8 nor did we eat anyone's bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, 9 not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us? (NKJV). 1 Timothy 4:12, ?Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity? 2 Peter 2:4-6 4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; 5 and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; 6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly? (NKJV). CONSIDER THIS: Yes, we may have a great deal of influence on others if we will serve God correctly and live our lives openly as Christians. We may enjoy the greatest contentment and happiness in life because we serve God faithfully and are an encouragement and a good example for others that do not have God in their lives. We may also have an encouraging effect on those that are Christians and are going through difficult times in their life, simply by remaining faithful and living godly lives for them to imitate, as the apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 4:15, ?Therefore I urge you, imitate me? (NKJV) and in 1 Corinthians 11:1, ?Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ? (NKJV). =================================== OUR SHUT-IN Those of our number who are not regular in attendance due to health, age or both: Audrey Binegar; (614) 777-8877 Margie Boysel; (614) 529-8644 Virginia Jordan; (614) 734-1856 Kathryn Kerr; (937) 642-9947 Geraldine Showalter; (614) 868-1333 James 1:27 ?Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, (and) to keep oneself unspotted from the world.? (ASV) Psalms 71:17-18 OUTLINE - THE BOOK OF JOEL A brief prophetic book of the Old Testament that predicted the outpouring of the spirit of God on all people-a prophecy fulfilled several centuries later on the Day of Pentecost (Joel 2:28-32; Acts 2:14-21). The title of the book comes from its author, the prophet Joel, whose name means Jehovah is God. Structure of the Book The three brief chapters of this book are divided into two major sections of about equal length. ? In the first section (1:1-2:11) the prophet Joel introduces himself and speaks to his readers about their need to turn from their sins. ? The speaker in the second part of the book (2:12-3:21) is the all-powerful God, who warns His people about the approaching day of judgment and assures them of His abiding presence, ? In spite of their unworthiness. In the first section of the book, Joel calls attention to a devastating swarm of locusts that had recently swept through the land (1:4). These destructive locusts stripped the foliage from all trees, shrubs, and crops (1:7). The people and livestock of Judah were facing the threat of starvation because of the famine that followed this invasion (1:15-18); as bad as this natural catastrophe had been, the prophet declares it will be as nothing in comparison to the coming day of the Lord. This is the day of JUDGMENT, when God will vent His wrath upon His sinful and disobedient people. Joel also informs the people that this terrible day can be avoided. The way of escape is to turn to God "with all your heart, with fasting, and with mourning" (2:12). After Joel delivers his pleas for repentance, God Himself speaks to His wayward people. In spite of the famine, He declares that there will be plenty to eat in the days of blessing to come (2:18-19). This day of renewal will be marked by the outpouring of His spirit (2:28-29). This is surely a reference to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost --- cf., Acts 2:16-33. Special Considerations - Readers of Joel are always impressed with the prediction of the future outpouring of the Holy Spirit (2:28-32). The apostle Peter used this passage to explain the exciting events of PENTECOST to his hearers (Acts 2:16-21). Just as Joel predicted, the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Jews at Pentecost and the Gentiles at the home of Cornelius some time later (cf., Acts 10-11). Consider this: The second section no doubt refers to the joys and blessings that would flow to the people for their repentance and return to faithfully observing Jehovah's instructions. This second section, in part, may be a reference to the establishment of the church that Jesus promised in Matthew 16:16. LET US LOVE AND SING AND WONDER ?...To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever!? (Rev. 1:5-6) INTRO.: A hymn which expresses glory and dominion to Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood is "Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder." The text was written by John New?ton (1725-1807). In 1779 Newton, along with poet William Cowper, compiled three books of the Olney Hymns, but Newton had published other hymns previously, such as this one which first appeared in his 1774 work Twen?ty Six Letters on Re?li?gious Sub?jects, by Om?i?cron. The modern text has been altered. Other Newton hymns which still appear in our books, in addition to his most famous one, "Amazing Grace," include "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken," "How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds," "Hungry, and Faint, and Poor," and "May the Grace of Christ, Our Savior." The tune (All Saints Old) most commonly used with "Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder" is by an anonymous composer and is taken from the Darm?stadt Ge?sang?buch of 1698. As with last week's weekly hymn study, I first saw this song in the 1961 Presbyterian hymnbook The Trinity Hymnal. Most denominational books do not use all the stanzas. (In another book, I have also seen the same tune used with the ancient Latin hymn, "Of the Father's Love Begotten"). Among hymnbooks published by brethren during the twentieth century for use in churches of Christ, it has not appeared or been found in any to my knowledge. Again, it is a shame, because the combination of words and music makes a powerful statement. The song gives several reasons why we should praise the one who washed us from our sins with His blood. I. Stanza 1 explains that He is the Savior "Let us love and sing and wonder, Let us praise the Savior?s Name! He has hushed the law?s loud thunder, He has quenched Mount Sinai?s flame. He has washed us with His blood, He has brought us nigh to God." A. One of the ways that we express our praise to Christ is by singing: Col. 3.16 B. One reason why we should praise Him is because He is the Savior: Lk. 2.11 C. The statement that "He has hushed the law's loud thunder, He has quenched Mt. Sinai's flame" is a poetically figurative way of saying that as our Savior He has removed the Old Testament law: Col. 2.14-17 II. Stanza 2 explains that He is the Lord who bought us "Let us love the Lord Who bought us, Pitied us when enemies, Called us by His grace, and taught us, Gave us ears and gave us eyes: He has washed us with His blood, He presents our souls to God." A. Jesus is the Lord who bought us with a price: 1 Cor. 6.20 B. This He did even while we were sinners or enemies of God: Rom. 5.8 C. As part of the process of buying us, He came to teach us God's will as His spokesman: Heb. 1.1-2 III. Stanza 3 explains that He is the conqueror who helps us overcome temptation "Let us sing, though fierce temptation Threaten hard to bear us down! For the Lord, our strong Salvation, Holds in view the conqueror?s crown: He Who washed us with His blood Soon will bring us home to God." A. All of us face temptations in this life: Jas. 1.14-15 B. Jesus is our strong salvation who will help us to overcome temptation: 1 Cor. 10.13 C. And to those who overcome, He holds forth the conqueror's crown: Rev. 2.10-11 IV. Stanza 4 explains that He is the expression of God's grace and justice "Let us wonder; grace and justice Join and point to mercy?s store; When through grace in Christ our trust is, Justice smiles and asks no more: He Who washed us with His blood Has secured our way to God." A. God is a God of justice whose eternal law demands punishment for sin: Rev. 6.23 B. However, He is also a God of mercy who wants us to be saved: Tit. 3.5 C. Having sent Jesus as an expression of His grace and mercy to meet the punishment of death demanded by sin, He offers salvation to those who trust in Christ: Eph. 1.11-13 V. Stanza 5 explains that He is the Lamb who is praised by saints above "Let us praise, and join the chorus Of the saints enthroned on high; Here they trusted Him before us, Now their praises fill the sky: 'Thou hast washed us with Thy blood; Thou art worthy, Lamb of God!'? A. There is now, even a chorus, around the throne of God, which praises Him: Rev. 4.8-11 B. This chorus includes saints who have already come out of great tribulation: Rev. 7.9-15 C. They trusted Jesus before us and praise Him because He redeemed us to God by His blood: Rev. 5.8-10 VI. Stanza 6 explains that He is the One whose name is above all other names "Hark! the Name of Jesus, sounded Loud, from golden harps above! Lord, we blush, and are confounded, Faint our praises, cold our love! Wash our souls and songs with blood, For by Thee we come to God." A. The name of Jesus deserves to be praised because it is above every name: Phil. 2.10-11 B. This name is the object of the praise above that is figuratively pictured as golden harps: Rev. 14.1-3 C. Even though by comparison our praise on earth may seem faint and cold, we still offer up the sacrifice of praise to God continually in the name of Jesus Christ: Heb. 13.15 CONCL.: Once I read a book about hymn histories (actually, a fairly good book) which roundly criticized Philip P. Bliss's hymn "Once for All" because it began, "Free from the law, O happy condition!" The author apparently believed that we are still bound to keep some part of the Old Testament law and thus objected to the statement that we are "free from the law," even though Bliss was obviously basing his wording on Paul's argument from Rom. 7.1-4 and even quotes from Rom. 8.2. However, the author also commended the hymns of John Newton as "theologically sound," yet in this hymn Newton made the very same point with the statement, "He has hushed the law's loud thunder, He has quenched Mt. Sinai's flame." Certainly, when we think of all that Christ has done for us, we can say, "Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder." Brotherly, Wayne S. A very good Thursday morning to each and everyone. May God bless you and yours. Here is an article from my recent files: THE RISKS OF GROWTH In Jesus' parable of the talents, the on-talent man hid his treasure in a hole in the ground. When called to account he said to his master, "Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reap- ing where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours" (Matt. 25:24,25). The master furiously denounced the servant as "wicked and lazy" and said, "You ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest" (vss. 26,27). It's important to consider that probably the leas effective way to grow money is by earning interest with bankers, but it's better than doing nothing at all! Whether the servant's fear was generated by his sloth, or vice versa, he proved to be totally worthless to his master. All growth is pursued with risk. Farmers understand this principle better than anyone. Crops are planted, a yield is anticipated, but the entire process is subject to the vagaries of weather and nature. There is a certain risk in spiritual growth, too. Scripture charges, "Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Pet. 3:18). That's an apostolic directive, not a polite suggestion. It demands action on our part. It means we have to study God's Word without fear or favor. It means we must learn to think for our- selves. It requires us to have a faith of our own, and the cour- age of personal conviction. And yet to do these things involv- es risk. Frankly, it's easier to bury our faith in a hole in the ground, just digging it up for occasional examination. But such is antithetical to the spirit of Christianity. So what are the risks of spiritual growth? First, is the likli-hood of personal frustration. Who has not wrangled with him- self over a thorny question, struggling to understand Bible principles more clearly? Not only is there the understanding of the principle, itself, but then there's the impact of that con- cept upon other concepts. To a disciplined student of God's Word, the wheels will never stop turning. Sometimes our thoughts can be disconcerting as we rethink old presupposit- ions. Very often we will reach the same conclusions we reach- ed before, but from a better-informed perspective. But what- ever our conclusions, then comes the "pain" of making per- sonal applications. Faith is much easier when buried in the ground. Second is the risk of opposition from our brethren. Some- times brethren object to the notion of "change" in any form, even if it's only an alteration in how a principle is explained. How often have we seen brethren differ, not over a Bible con- cept, but over the fact that one brother explains it in words different from the other! And there will always be brethren who equate the notion of independent thinking with apostasy. The fear seems to be that if anyone thinks "outside the box," he will depart from the faith. Such fear is irrational. It either fails to recognize the objective nature of God's revelation, or it is rooted in a creedal view of "truth" which must be defend- ed against all attempts at close examination. Truth never fears examination. It can only become clearer in the people's minds with deeper examination. And that is precisely what God wants. Third, there is the risk of intellectual arrogance. As one restudies and rethinks old questions he must fight the tempt- ation of thinking he has discovered something "new." If he has discovered something truly new, it isn't in God's Word. His understanding of the question may be new, but the truth has been there all along. He is not the first to see it or articul- ate it. And he must remember that if he has changed his thinking in one particular, how many other things does he need to understand more perfectly? It suits none of us to be arrogant when we are, infact, finite creatures made from dirt. Bible study is neither dull nor boring, except to the one with no desire to grow. To the risk-taker, no thrill is any greater than that of contemplating and comprehending God's Truth. The desire for a greater understanding of truth should never become pretext for arrogance or unbiblical innovations; but neither should calls for safety and soundness be a pre- text for willful ignorance and laziness. Let's take the risks necessary to grow spiritually, that we might find favor with our Master at last. ------ Steve Dewhirst via Gospel Power, Vol. 15, No. 15, April 13, 2008. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <004201c8aba8$605de200$6501a8c0@533034B8A6DF4D9> Neo-Institutionalism, are we Splitting Hairs? By Don Martin From the time that I became a Christian, I have been given to detail and particularity. Some of this is due to my training in the secular field and early experiences in life. I have asked myself many times if I am too given to detail, to the point of splitting hairs. I know that on occasion I have been told that I am guilty of this. However, those who have so told me have been individuals who suffer from the "big picture syndrome" devoid of any particularity consideration. There is obviously, then, a happy balance between only seeing the whole and excessively focusing on detail. We must see the whole, but we must also realize that particulars make up the whole and their individual nature and contribution to the whole must be acknowledged. I just returned from the south, having engaged in some special work in the area of institutionalism. I was actually able to preach for a church that has been under the influence of institutionalism for many years. I was very appreciative of their cordiality and I look forward to doing future work with them (I preached on relevant matters and differences). In some ways, I am now seeing some better attitudes among those whom we have styled as institutional churches than I am seeing among some having the reputations of being "non-institutional." Case in Point: I received an email advertisement from the Truth Bookstore (see addendum) that read as follows: "We are a group of Christians aspiring to teach the word of God, to inform brethren regarding the Lord's work in various parts of the country, and to strengthen and encourage Christians. In addition to the bookstores, we also publish Truth Magazine. To learn more about this magazine or to subscribe, click here." When I read this advertisement, my response was, "Really!" Perhaps some of my response was shaped and determined by past experience with some of the neo-institutionally minded promoters of the Guardian of Truth Foundation, the newly re-configured mega religious entity among us. Their subtle marketing approach has come down to, "We are a group of Christians aspiring to teach the word of God....." How simple and innocent, it would appear. The neo-institutionalism to which I refer is the practice and mentality of forming an entity, separate and apart from a local church entity (Phili.1: 1). The plan was that much clandestine recruiting was to be done and when the time was ripe, they would emerge as a well formed and organized foundation to corporately influence the brotherhood. I began to hear talk of such in the making years ago. This privately funded organization was (is) to corporately preach the gospel and provide edification for Christians. They would have (do have) a president, treasury, board of overseers, and mission the same as the local church and would provide individual Christians the corporate means of preaching the gospel outside of the local church organization (treasury, elders, structure, etc.). I was also told, "If you do not join us, we shall consider you an enemy and make it so that you will not be able to hold meetings or even find a local church where you can preach!" I wanted to cry to high heaven then and warn brethren of what was coming. I did do what I could by way of anticipation, but the response of many was, "We have no idea of what you speak!" Alas, the full blown foundation is now a reality for all to see. However, they continue to be clandestine in their modus operandi and tactics. Even though all the essential vestiges for constituting an entity as opposed to simply some individual Christians concurrently working are extant, they continue to maintain that they are not corporately preaching the gospel (above advertisement). Deceit, misrepre- sentation, and the slandering and political maneuvering of any who oppose them remains a chief trait of these brethren. Let us now return to our original concern, the matter of splitting hairs. The scriptures clearly distinguish between individual action and collective function (I Tim. 5: 16). There are, moreover, some matters that are good that the individual may and is actually commanded to do that are precluded when it comes to the local church (Ibid.). A relevant matter is that the local church is observed in the New Testament as the organization of Christians, having structure, specified leadership, a treasury, and a corporate mission. There is corporate structure as opposed to individual action (Phili. 1: 1, Acts 9: 26); qualified leaders to oversee the corporate entity and work (Acts 14: 23, I Tim. 3); monies to fund this organizational work (I Cor. 16: 1, 2); and God has assigned the local church entity the work of being the "pillar and ground of the truth" (I Tim. 3: 15). While we do observe in the scriptures Christians individually, concurrently, and concurrently working in a circumstance of physical proximity, if you please, we do not have them corporately functioning, except in the local church circumstance. For instance, Philip individually preached the gospel (Acts 8: 26ff.). Aquila and Priscilla are observed working together to teach Apollos (Acts 18: 24ff.). Notice, though, no organization is involved. In other words, Philip did not work through the, let's say, "Reach the Lost Foundation," having its own treasury, oversight, structure, etc. In the case of Aquila and Priscilla, there is no, "Present the Full Truth Foundation," having its own treasury, oversight, structure, etc. Again, we only read of the local church providing Christians corporate means to preach the gospel and the local church is the only organization observed in the New Testament. One obvious reason for this is because the local church designedly has in place the means of providing the requisite guidance and protection for the preaching of the truth (cp. Tit. 1: 5-11). Look again at the Truth Bookstore advertisement that is reflective of the thinking in general of the Guardian of Truth Foundation: "We are a group of Christians aspiring to teach the word of God, to inform brethren regarding the Lord's work in various parts of the country, and to strengthen and encourage Christians. In addition to the bookstores, we also publish Truth Magazine. To learn more about this magazine or to subscribe, click here." The truth is they are Christians who are functioning in and through a fully organized foundation, separate and apart from the local church entity, the one to which God has assigned the corporate work of disseminating and protecting the truth (I Tim. 3: 15). Some have asked, "If we removed the corporate structure, the treasury, president, board of directors, etc., would you then have a problem?" For sure, the foundation circumstance would not be present. It is just this simple. The Guardian of Truth Foundation is not just a group of individual Christians going about to individually teach the word of God, strengthen Christians, and publish a religious magazine. Such is a total misrepresentation and subtle marketing and they know it. (The Guardian of Truth Foundation is not simply a corporate business for the purpose of making money by publishing books, as they used to contend.) IRS certainly recognizes the corporate nature of the Guardian of Truth Foundation. However, some brethren, even most of the promoters of the foundation do not seem to be able to make such a distinction between corporate and individual work. No, I do not believe we are simply "splitting hairs" when we so distinguish between the organization milieu of the Guardian of Truth Foundation as opposed to individual and even concurrent action. What is on the horizon? Without any intent to brag, I have done my share of work among institutional churches. I now see precisely the same mind-set, rationale, and logistics among many of my brethren, especially those involved with the Guardian of Truth Foundation and many associated with Florida College as I observed with institutionally minded members back in the sixties. The foremost scary thing that I am observing is a total failure to distinguish between individual and corporate action. This was the beginning of all the liberalism of our "institutional brethren" and I humbly submit it is also the beginning of a greater and more swift apostasy among those who used to be termed as "non-institutional." Brethren, just because a church treasury is not involved in funding these organizations and foundations to corporately preach the gospel does not justify their existence. Already, we are seeing the new more open "unity-in-diversity" fellowship mentality as these G.O.T brethren attempt to justify all of them working together while they hold many serious opposing views on such matters as unscriptural marriages. "Just because I am a member of G.O.T along with Joe Blow who essentially advocates adulterous marriage, does not make me wrong, we are individually working." What nonsense and political gymnastics! Such is only the beginning. In closing, God truly knew what He was doing in only authorizing the local church in and through which Christians are to corporately preach the gospel. To form such foundations as the present Guardian of Truth Foundation is to ignore what is taught relative to how Christians are to organize themselves and such requires acting upon the silence of the scriptures (cp. Heb. 7: 14, I Cor. 4: 6, ASV). Message-ID: <08b001c8abab$2036d1c0$4befcd48@dadsdell> Jerry Blount to the list.. So. they call this worship? Someone calls this church? Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate. Text for today's article.. II Corinthians 6:15-17 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. It has been sometime since I have written, owing to the distractions of building onto my house. However, I have had opportunity to research the modern homogenization of the church into worldly entertainment that is sweeping our country. I will share this research with you. As with the threat of Islam, most people among the older generation have no idea what is afoot, or at least how far it goes. Today, I'd like to take a peek into this subject. Three specific contemporary trends come to mind: 1. The community church movement and contemporary worship services. 2. The loss of discipline and godliness as a cornerstone of faithful religion. 3. The final act: setting aside Jesus as insignificant and unimportant. (Oprah's version of church) Not every church moving in this direction involves all three trends, but any one of the three is a movement away from the established truths of scripture. Today's article is a plea to parents to look closely at where their young adults are being led under the noses of said parents. Let's use the "contemporary service" arrangement as an example. The practical impact of this approach is to create a "young people's church" that is separated from an "old people's church" while keeping it all under the same roof. Once the stabilizing influence of age is diluted and a weak or ignorant eldership is in place, there is no limit to where this will go. Consider this: It has been just short of five hundred years since Martin Luther, the founder of the Lutheran church, tried to keep organs and all other instruments of music out of church assemblies. Most people have long since forgotten that the founders of the world's largest denominations entirely rejected instrumental music in worship as a Catholic innovation which caters to carnal desires. Yes, this includes Methodists, Presbyterians, and even Baptists. Once upon a time, they would not even allow organ music in because it diluted the "fruit of the lips" (singing). Watch theses two videos and ask yourself if the founders of said churches were right; "Why worldly churches grow" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5y5OKl5t1c These churches have become so worldly one can no longer tell the difference between a rock concert and a church service. It is unbelievable how the creator of this video can take an actual rock concert and its song about a bunch of people wanting to go to hell (an incredibly vile song) and just fade into a church service playing the same song with the fire blasting from the stage and all. (Click on the above link and watch it for yourself.) Does the objection come from rock music? No, it isn't limited to rock music. Many "churches" have turned a mild service "worship" into a country music laden bar hopping free-for-all" One of our local churches recently had a "traditional service" and a "wild service" advertised on their marquis. Another local church has adopted the practice of meeting in homes in lieu of a Sunday evening service. The problem? Well, the young folks decided to go see the movie "21" an R rated movie (nudity and all). as their worship to God. Well a young lady that was visiting with them went along but was offended by the nudity. Last night said young lady's mother was asking me if that was really ok to worship God in such a manner. NO! It's not ok! Read Romans 1:16-32 and you can tell me how God will react in the judgment over such things. An entertainment driven church" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVP_qJf6_ow I watched this second video and thought I was watching an American idol episode. I had to look closely at the sign to see that they had altered it slightly to avoid copyright issues. I wonder if they have ever noticed the complaint of the New Testament to the golden calf? What am I referring to? Well, the church at Corinth had already taken this worldly approach to thing nearly two thousand years ago. In 1 Corinthians 8, Paul alludes to the practice of Corinthian Christians of going to idolatrous shrines to eat, basically to imitate those in their culture who worship pagan gods, yet still be Christian. Paul spends three chapters of the Bible to elaborate on a simple answer: no. In the course of that discussion, Paul brings forward an Old Testament substantive argument about "why" the golden calf of the Exodus was evil (1 Corinthians 8-11). It was an attempt to worship God in man's own way. In other worships it was an attempt to worship God, while rejecting God's revelation of Himself and His wishes for worship. So, why didn't God just accept it as an offering in good conscience from the heart? Paul spends three chapters of your Bible to elaborate on the simple answer.NO! Bellydance In the course of that discussion (I Corinthians 8-11) Paul brings forward an OT substantive argument about "why" the golden calf of the Exodus was evil. It was an attempt to worship God in man's own way. So why didn't God just accept it as an offering in good conscience from the heart? I Corinthians 10:7. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. ****** How many people do you know today that view the church as a place "to play?" Jesus took issue with the Jews of the first century because they had come to view the temple as a place to make money instead of being a house of prayer. Those Jews would have fervently declared it was still a house of prayer. We know from Jesus' reaction that it wasn't a house of prayer any longer. If Jesus threw the money changers out of the temple in anger, how do you think He'll react to a rock group singing about evil, worldly things? God can tell the difference! And.He will sort this out! Matthew 7:20-23 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. If this passage doesn't apply to these people following these roads. when would it ever apply? If this passage doesn't apply to these people following these roads, when would it ever apply? The frightening thing to me is that many who see this behavior don't see anything wrong with it. Let me ask an obvious question: How many times in Old Testament history were the people of God just merrily marching on their way into evil and just seemed to be oblivious to God's anger? Jeremiah 6: 13-15 For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; And from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace. Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the Lord. How does your church promote itself? Marketing God like beer and sports cars http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZi7Vzc4X64 4weeksofsexWhen a church has built itself on the social gospel.. i.e. parties and entertainment it is difficult to stop the trend. Each generation wants what they cannot have. It is a part of the human equation. So, as the new generation comes of age if they are untaught. they will always opt to go further than the last one was willing to. This "church ad" pretty much summarizes the liberal, worldly mentality afoot doesn't it? Loud music. Real people, not the godly, stuffy kind of people, right? Fun kids programs. And most of all, Short services. You won't have to endure "a bunch of holiness" to get to the "real entertainment" with "real people" and baby sitting for the kids. Most churches start with kids services, children's church, then move on to the "community church" orientation (i.e. "fellowship" parties in whatever form they take). After their older people get over that shock, they add a "contemporary service." From here there is a gradual but consistent buildup of carnal lures. Compare this to the Apostle Paul's instruction for approaching God. Romans 12:1-2 "Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, {which is} your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." Can you think of anywhere in your Bible that you can turn and find the approach portrayed in the add pictured? If not how can you "prove what the will of God is?" Can anyone really point to your New Testament to describe "loud music" as "good and acceptable and perfect" in the worship of God? That is the message of the book of Judges. It is a repeating cycle of regression, disaster and repentance. As the new generation goes too far, some of the last generation eventually sees the danger and repents. Unfortunately the momentum is already out of control. Therefore the alarmed generation cannot stop what they actually have helped to start. All they can do is leave and start over. Oftentimes the older generation is forced to leave their own kids behind. Consider the explanation at the end of the book of judges. Judges 21: 25. In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. ***** Is this like the modern example of weak leadership coupled with ignorance? Is your church focused as the church below is? Do you worship and pursue youth? "Should church be all about numbers" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVEti4iEfuI Lets close with two principles given to us by Jesus. John 4: 24. "God is a spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." Matthew 15: 14. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Note: One final thought.. I have made no attempt whatsoever to sort out the terminology. Many of these terms are misnomers (Fellowship is normally misapplied for example.). I have just used the terms as they are used by the folks I have discussed in this article. Consider what John said, "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would *no doubt* have continued with us: but *they went out*, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us" (I John 2:19). And what did they lose? They lost those who loved the world and things of the world (cf. I John 2:15). They lost "brethren" who will hate a Christian like the world does (cf. I John 2:13, 15). These are in fact, and proven by their conduct to be, children of the Devil (cf. I John 3:4, 8, 10). They lost those who would not listen to the truth, who spoke as the world speaks, and whom the world is more than willing to listen to! They were liars who no longer could speak the truth (cf. I John 4:5-6). When they left the bitter envying, strife, boasting against the truth, lying against the truth and all the confusion that came from the earthly, sensual, devilish wisdom they possessed left with them! (cf. James 3:14-16). Now that they've left the teachers and preacher(s) can continue with appropriate instruction, warning and application that keeps the church from being lost to the current and latest apostasies. And should there be a carnal "mouth" (male or female) that pops up then it can be shut immediately as it should be, and silenced either as to its public or private attestations! (cf. Titus 1:10-16). Brethren how many churches have a sister's "mouth" at the front door after services, as she leaves, spewing strife that needs to be shut? If your church does then by all means men shut it! Or, make that between class and worship services in the back talking loudly so others can pick up on her discontent. Shut this and all others' "mouths" that are workings of Satan from children of the Devil bent on destroying the church, as God ordained it, and making a place among apostates in the brotherhood by kicking out faithful elders, teachers and preachers! (cf. 3 John 9). These accuse the faithful unjustly with wicked words, spread strife with their mouth, and set an example of evil for others to imitate (cf. 3 John 10-11). Are you getting this? They have a goal, an objective, and will sacrifice the truth and brethren to achieve it! Note this: these do not "just" present a personality difference or conflict! If you are sick of hearing that cover up it is for good reason. Wake up! Such are full of the works of the flesh and will not inherit the kingdom! They are identified by the following: *Galatians 5:19-21 (KJV) * 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are *these*; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told *you* in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. They belong with this category of Christians: *James 3:14-16 (KJV) * 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but *is* earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife *is*, there *is* confusion and every evil work. They are looking forward to and working towards division in order that they might have their own way and that with the kind of preach ing that lacks application and pleases the un- godly (cf. 2 Tim. 4:1-5). They will get what they want any way that they can, and the longer you postpone dealing with them scripturally the closer they get to their unscriptural goal or goals (cf. Rev. 2:20). Hear this! Older members must not turn to sentimentalism "in our day" ? things must be met head on with the Word (cf. I John 2:14; Heb. 13:7; Ps. 92:14-15). Those like Diotrephes, as well as Mrs. Diotrophes (the she "elders" who manipulate men who are weak in the Word but strong in carnality) can be powerful enough to discard what the Apostles wrote (cf. 3 John 9), change the decision making process of the local church and direct it right into endorsing apostasy (cf. 3 John 10). These are often prey for big institutional men who flatter to promote their human organizations and those who support them. *Some Works Start Under The Best Of Circumstances* Listen! If you stay with the truth and have to leave with others who are faithful you are winners. Our lives, teaching and preaching are to be about the truth of the Word and living and upholding it (cf. 2 Tim. 3:16-17; I John 2:3-6). You will always have integrity with God when you stay with the truth of His Word (cf. 3 John 12). The goal is eternal life (cf. I Jo. 2:25). John introduced his first epistle, I John, with the necessary requirement of walking in the light of God's Word (cf. I John 1:5-10). He was no brotherhood politician for he spoke of Liars who do not walk in the light. These were not a figment of his imagination. And we are not here to please men just to be pleasing men! You can name false brethren, organizations, and doctrines! The faithful don't always get the building, land, etc., in spite of their pleas. *Some Churches Continue Under The Worst Of Circumstances* Hear Paul, "For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you." (cf. 1 Corinthians 11:19). While those who are approved (acceptable, tried and approved before God) are made manifest consider that those not approved are also seen for what they truly are! Years ago older preachers freely talked about such children of the Devil who would come in and present themselves as members of a local church, and then by the carnal works of the evil one divide the church. Often they would claim the property, treasury and building and win it! There were always bigger churches somewhere who would aid and abet the pattern, providing teachers and preachers of course for that is how the apostasy is able to continue. Satan has his factory of apostate preachers and teachers! The old Devil will always be more than willing to say to a church, "Let us get you a new kind of preacher!" And you know what? That's what those churches got and that's what some churches in our brotherhood are getting today! There is nothing more carnal and full of the works of the flesh that I can think of at this age in my life than brethren who work to stop applicable preaching and teaching, and who stop at nothing to get the new kind of preacher! Brethren beware! It is quite possible that you know of such things happening among us. Old warnings need to be issued today for apostasy has a repeated pattern throughout the ages of the church. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ To learn more call, visit or visit our website at: http://yumavalleychurchofchrist.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You asked: A group of us at work just finished studying the book of James. After reading the last few verses of chapter 5 the question came up "can a person loose his salvation" There were several opinions. What conclusion can be drawn from scripture? Reply: The last couple verses in James chapter five read thus: "19: Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; 20: Let him know, that he which converted the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins" (Jas. 5). We can easily see why James' teaching would prompt a discussion as to whether or not the impenitent child of God can be eternally lost. A few immediate observations: James mentioned, "...if any of you." Hence, what he is writing applies to the Christians he is addressing (cp. 1: 1, 2; 16-18; 2: 1, etc.). He then mentions, "...err from the truth." To err from the truth is seriously consequential, as it takes the truth to save (John 8: 32). James then wrote about, "...convert him." Change is necessary. He expands in the next verse by adding, "...converteth the sinner....." He includes two things in verse nineteen that help use to determine exactly the seriousness of the action being contemplated. The first action is, "...save a soul from death," and "...shall hide a multiple of sins." Sin results in spiritual death or separation from God (cp. Isa. 59: 1, 2). Thus, James irrefutably shows that a child of God can so sin as to be lost or, in other words, not saved any longer. Only denominational bias and loyalty can preclude one from coming to the same conclusions. There is an article on "Salvation" I recommend you read found in Bible Truths. Consider, in addition, the below comments: One can lose their salvation (2 Pet. 1: 5-11, I Cor. 10: 12). The exact expression "fall from grace" is found in the past tense climate in Galatians 5: 4. Not only can one fall, but one would have been better off to have never known than to know and turn back (2 Pet. 2: 21, 22). The Bible teaches the security of the believer, but it is conditional (Jn. 10: 27-29). The biblical principle is if we forsake God, he will forsake us (2 Chroni. 15: 1-3). God will not force any to be saved or to remain saved (Jn. 3: 16). We must keep ourselves in the love of God (Jude 21). Thanks again for your good question and for your interest in spiritual matters. A very good Saturday morning to each and everyone. May God bless you and yours. Here is an article from my recent files: GOD HAS SPOKEN "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 Jno. 4:1). Thus, the task of distin- quishing between truth and error is given to the saints of God. The spirit of truth is different from the spirit of error, listen- ing to God and His messengers, the apostles (1 Jno. 4:6). The spirit of error does not listen to God and will not be bound by HIs Word. The church at Ephesus was commended not condemned, for testing those who claimed to be apostles (Rev. 2:2). That they could not bear those who were evil was praiseworthy. This aspect of Christian duty is not a pleasant task. Those who "despise dominion" don't like their unauthor- ized practices to be questioned and condemned, so they be- rate and disparage those who point out their errors, blaming teachers of truth for division that results from disregard for lack of authority exposed by those teachers of truth. Is the silence of God His way of authorizing proper service? Should Christians keep silent when other professed Christians intrude upon the silence of God? Was the writer of Hebrews wrong when he declared that Jesus could not be a priest under the Law of Moses because Moses was silent about priests coming from the tribe of Judah? Note Heb. 7: 12-14; 8:4. How can one "speak the oracles of God" if God has not spoken to authorize a thing (1 Pet. 4:11)? Is it right or wrong to speak out against votive candles in worship, against women bishops, againsts instrumental music in wor- ship, against using coffee in the Lord's Supper, against fund- raisers such as yard sales and bake sales for the local church? ------------ Gilbert Alexander. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <000601c8ad2f$63a58840$0401a8c0@Steven> From: TRUTH & REASON, a bulletin of the Glendale church of Christ, Glendale, AZ. Editor: Steven Harper May 4, 2008 John Hagee - Antichrist? John Hagee, in case you didn't know, is the self-proclaimed 'pastor' of the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas - a church described as 'a nondenominational, evangelical church with more than 19,000 active members.' Hagee is one of the leading denominational preachers in this country and at the forefront of those who preach and teach a premillennial view of the Bible wherein he fully expects Christ to come again and set up a literal, earthly, kingdom, with His throne in Jerusalem. Hagee's view of the coming kingdom of Christ is grossly erroneous, but it draws the crowds and keeps him at the forefront of the televangelists, so don't think he is going to surrender that viewpoint anytime soon. In his numerous teachings on the subject of the coming 'Rapture' and 'Battle of Armageddon' to which he so often ties the situation in the Middle East and varying political situations around the world, Hagee often speaks about one called 'the AntiChrist' [whom he had once identified as the head of the European Union], a man who would rule over the earth for three and a half years before joining with a false prophet and uniting in the final battle against Jesus Christ and the faithful. You've probably heard the story of 'the Rapture' before, but Hagee boldly identifies all the characters! I won't go into all the numerous errors of Hagee's 'interpretation' of the Bible, but I do want to point out that the term 'antichrist' is a Biblical term. The apostle John, in fact, defines who that is! John wrote by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, "Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also" (1st John 5:22, 23). He would later write, "For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist" (2nd John 1:7). But there is more than one antichrist! John also wrote, "Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour" (1st John 2:18). According to the inspired apostle, anyone who denies Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, or who denies that Jesus is the Christ, is antichrist [the term 'antichrist' simply means one in opposition to the Christ]. Now, here's the point of mentioning all of this: By the Bible definition, John Hagee is himself antichrist! Of course, he is going to try and deny it [and he has, in a written statement on his website]. Hagee flatly denies any talk of Him not accepting Jesus as the Christ [or 'the Messiah,' as he likes to say]. Wherever could someone get the idea that he did not believe Jesus was the Christ? From his own words! You see, Hagee wrote a book which he heavily promoted, entitled In Defense of Jerusalem. In that book [as you might guess], Hagee gives argument after argument for why the United States should be always ready to defend Jerusalem from coming under the control of anyone but the Jews, and it is all based on his twisted view of Scripture and by which he teaches his premillennial view. What does he say in that book? He said, "The Jews did not Reject Jesus as Messiah" (p. 132); he asked, "If God intended for Jesus to be the Messiah of Israel, why didn't he authorize Jesus to use supernatural signs to prove he was God's Messiah, just as Moses had done?" (p. 137); he said, "The Jews were not rejecting Jesus as Messiah; it was Jesus who was refusing to be the Messiah to the Jews" (p. 140), and "They wanted him to be their Messiah, but he flatly refused" (p. 141); he said, "He refused to be their Messiah, choosing instead to be the Savior of the world" (p. 143); and he said, "Jesus rejected to the last detail the role of Messiah in word or deed" (p. 145). Hagee tried to backtrack on these words in his published statement, though. He wrote, "I was surprised to learn that some people were interpreting my words as a rejection of this most fundamental Christian belief that Jesus came to earth as the Messiah promised in the Hebrew Scriptures." [Note how he says the problem is others 'interpreting' his words; his words, apparently, are not the problem.] He would also add, "Over the centuries, Christians have been quick to condemn the Jews for failing to recognize Jesus as Messiah. This approach led to replacement theology and the viewpoint of some that God has rejected and broken covenant with the Jewish people. "I tried to challenge this view by highlighting a distinction that has been long recognized in Christian theology between the role Jesus played in His first coming, and the role He will play in his second coming. Jesus came the first time as the suffering Messiah, as exemplified by His persecution, rejection and crucifixion. Jesus will come back as the reigning Messiah, who will rule the world from His throne in Jerusalem as King of Kings and Lord of Lords." In case this is a bit confusing, Hagee is saying Christians for the past 20 centuries have misunderstood the Jews' view of Jesus and their rejection of Him as the Messiah because [according to Hagee] God really didn't reject the Jews because they rejected Jesus and He didn't initiate a new covenant after all. The purported 'misunderstanding' of his own words were based on his failure to clearly explain his belief that Jesus did not come as the 'royal' Messiah [as King], but only as 'the suffering Messiah.' Huh? Let me be as plain as I can in refuting Hagee's erroneous views of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ - the Messiah. First of all, even in prophecy was it said that the Christ [Jesus] would be rejected (Psa. 118:22; Isa. 53:3), and that prophecy was fulfilled (Matt. 21:42-45); even those who rejected Him [the Jewish leaders] understood He was speaking of them. When the apostles began preaching the gospel, they taught the same (Acts 4:10-12). Second, Jesus did use supernatural signs to prove He was God's Messiah and this, too, was taught the first time the gospel was preached (Acts 2:22). John pointed to those miracles as proof enough to believe He was the Christ (John 20:30, 31)! The rest of Hagee's erroneous statements can be answered by referring back to these points. But let me make the point as to how Hagee is antichrist. Hagee, in his published statement that was supposed to clear up any 'misunderstanding' about his views of Jesus, denied Jesus came to be King. I must again point you to the first time the gospel was preached and how Peter referred to an Old Testament passage where God promised David that one of his descendants would be raised up to sit on his throne (Acts 2:30), and applied that passage to Jesus (vv. 31-35). While Hagee seems unable to see this, the Scriptures plainly teach that Jesus did ascend to that throne - but not in Jerusalem as the Jews then believed and as Hagee, now, believes; His throne is in heaven! Jesus would later say that He had already "sat down with My Father on His throne" (past tense; Rev. 3:21). There is no kingdom yet to come! But Hagee - and millions of others - deny plain Bible teaching because they are hanging on this 'premillennial kingdom' theory that comes from a convoluted and selective interpretation of Scripture. Why? For one, it teaches a 'second chance' theology that gives all unbelievers one more chance before Judgment. But more than any depth of thought or understanding, it makes a fantastic story! Some are simply too willing to believe it because it is so utterly fantastic - and thereby reject the simple plan of salvation that is actually taught in God's word. So, are you for Christ or antichrist? What do you believe? -- Steven Harper -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... "What does God require of us? 2. What does the Bible command us to do? Past articles in this series have answered both of these questions by showing we determine what God requires of each of us and of what He approves or authorizes by looking for Direct Statements and Commands, Approved Apostolic Examples; and Necessary Implications/Inferences in the New Testament, the inspired writings of the Jesus' apostles and prophets. It has also been pointed out that an authorized act or action is sometimes general (generic in nature) allowing man to make choices in carrying out the thing to be done, while other things are specified (specific in nature) where no other choice is allowed than the thing specified to do the thing commanded. All of these things can be learned by a careful study of that which is written on the pages of the New Testament. But, what if nothing is said about a matter? What if the Bible is silent? This is the realm where many of the divisions in the religious world have come about. People presuming to do things because the Scriptures are silent about some matter they want to practice. Most people who claim Christianity can agree on what the Bible says. The disagreements come in areas where God in His word has said nothing. Here is where people presume to speak for God. One of the most common questions asked is, "Why can't we do such and such (several subjects may come to mind - sprinkling for baptism, infant baptism, mechanical music in worship, building and maintaining human institutions, etc.). The Bible doesn't say we can't." The question should be, "If the Bible is silent about some religious faith or practice are we then free to do what we think best since God has not spoken about the matter? This is a very important question that must be answered in the study of Bible authority. So, what is the answer? For any who are sincerely concerned about Bible Authority the answer to the above question will depend on their attitude in approaching the subject. Basically there are two attitudes that prevail toward the silence of the scriptures, i.e., that which we cannot read about in the New Testament. 1. If the Bible is silent on a matter, where God has not spoken, men have the liberty to act and do as they think best. Thus silence gives consent. 2. If the Bible is silent we must also be silent. Silence does not give consent. It prohibits. If it is not revealed on the pages of the New Testament it is not authorized. Which of these two attitudes is scriptural? Which is pleasing to God? Does man have the right to act when the Bible is silent? My attitude in approaching Bible Authority is the second one mentioned above. The silence of the scriptures does not authorize anything. It prohibits. If the first attitude is right, then men can presume to speak for God. And no one has this right. God has revealed His mind through His word 1.Cor.2:9-13. By reading this revealed word we can know what He wants us to know and do. If He has not revealed something then how can we know it will please Him to do it? The Bible authorizes only by WHAT IT SAYS - NOT BY WHAT IT DOES NOT SAY. When God has not spoken, men have no right to presume to speak for Him. In other words, the silence of the Scriptures does not authorize man to do anything religiously. It prohibits. A very clear example of the fact that the silence of God prohibits, rather than allows something is found in Heb.7:11-17. The writer is showing that Jesus was the High Priest after the order of Melchizedek, but not of Aaron. Why couldn't He be a High Priest in the Aaronic (Levitical) priesthood? Because of the silence of the scriptures. Jesus was of the tribe of Judah, not Levi, the priestly tribe. He writes,"For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood" 7:14. The very fact that God's word was silent about people being priests who were not of the tribe of Levi prohibited Jesus from being a priest after the order of Aaron. Again in Heb.1:4-8 the writer proves that only Jesus could claim to be the Son of God, and He was superior to the angels by using the silence of the scriptures. No angel could claim to be the Son of God because of God's silence. For to which of the angels did He ever say; 'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You?''' 1:5. Since God had not given such honor (said nothing about it) to an angel none could claim to be the Son of God. What God said was sufficient to authorize Jesus to be the Son of God, what He did not say prohibited anyone else for being so. Another example showing that the silence of God prohibits (allows nothing), rather than authorizes is found in Acts 15. A meeting in Jerusalem takes place. The elders of the Jewish church at Jerusalem and the Gentile church at Antioch meet with the apostles to determine if the Judaizing teachers from Judea had authority to bind the keeping of the Law of Moses and circumcism on the Gentiles. At the conclusion of the meeting a letter was written to be circulated among the brethren stating the decision made at that time. You can read the letter that was written in 15:23-29. Take special note of the latter part of v.24. "Since we heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, 'You must be circumcised and keep the Law' - to whom we no such commandment (emphasis mine t.t.)." The Judaizing teachers had received no authorization to teach as they did, but how was it proved? By silence. The apostle's silence in the matter prohibited the Judaizing teachers from teaching as they did. No! Silence does not give consent. The silence of the Scriptures does not authorize man to do anything religiously. It prohibits. Brethren, let us recognize that where God has not spoken we cannot presume to think for Him. Paul wrote, ".that you might learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other" 1.Cor.4:6. The Scriptures have been given "that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work" 2.Tim.3:17. If they thoroughly equip us, then why do we puny humans think we can improve on what God has said by assuming we know what He wants, when He hasn't spoken? We are to "be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a workman who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" 2.Tim.2:15. This meant that if Timothy wanted God's approval he had the responsibility and obligation to use God's word properly. This didn't allow Timothy, or anyone today, to speak for God. Let's be satisfied with what has been written, and not go beyond. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... (Romans 1:16) A publication of the church of Christ in Norwalk, Ohio Volume III, Number 18: May 04, 2008 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A City in a Community "Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid" (Matthew 5:14). When we consider what Jesus says here, what do we think He means? We talk often about the contrast between "light" and "darkness" and our need to "be the light," and this is well and good. We also speak about the obviousness of the "city set on a hill," and how we as Christians should be evident in the communities in which we live. This also is well and good. But how is it that we manifest ourselves as the light of the world, and as the city set on the hill? Many times we approach it from the negative angle: since you're the "light" and the "city," everyone will be looking at you and if you stumble, it will be used against the cause of Christ. This is quite true; we know that one can do plenty of good, and all that can be erased in the minds of others by one bad deed. It is important for us to conduct ourselves so as to not bring reproach upon the cause of Christ (cf. 1 Peter 2:15-16). Yet, when Jesus establishes that we are to be the light of the world, and the city set on a hill, He teaches this with positive force. In many ways, it's more of a challenge than a declarative statement: how is it that we are the light of the world? A city set on a hill? Are we so living as to be the light of the world or the city set on the hill? Normally, when we think of such things, we think in terms of personal morality and perhaps a concept of evangelism. This is well and good, but in many ways, it must go deeper. If a brother or sister be naked and in lack of daily food, and one of you say unto them, 'Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled'; and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in itself (James 2:15-17). James speaks of how we are to relate to our brethren, but the principle certainly applies to our conduct with all men (cf. Galatians 6:10). How are we benefiting those around us? If there is no darkness, there can be no light. A city set on a hill is rather unimpressive if there is no one around to see the city. When Jesus uses these images, He fully intends for us to understand that we are to be seen by others. We are not just to be the light, but to be seen as the light. We are not just to be the city set on a hill, but to be seen as that city set on a hill. Are we-- as individuals comprising a greater body-- that visible in our communities? Put it this way-- if all of a sudden, for whatever reason, a congregation ceases to exist in a given community, will it be missed? Would the loss of the church be seen as a detriment to the community, or would the event be passed over without notice? I am not trying to say that we should exist just to please the community. I also am not saying that we, as a corporate collective, need to do what many denominations do in order to be seen as a force for good in communities (i.e. benevolent organizations). But I am trying to say that we need to assess whether we are a benefit to the community around us or not. If we're going to put on the mantle of Christ, we need to love our neighbor. Jesus did not just spend time with His twelve disciples, or even the combination of the 12 and 70. The 12 and 70 often accompanied Him as He went about the cities of Galilee preaching and ministering to the people. After all, He was the Light in the midst of darkness (John 1:4). He was the city set on the hill. And it is enough for us to be like Him (Matthew 10:25). Jesus could promote His teachings because the people could see what He did and how He loved them and showed compassion on them. Now, many did reject Him, but it wasn't because of perceived hypocrisy. We should be marked by the same type of life. We can preach the Gospel in our communities night and day, and if we are not active in our communities, helping the poor, finding ways of standing for the right, and so on, few are going to care what we have to say. Even if we are active in our communities, many are not going to care. But we at least can be respected, then, for what we do, and not be seen like the situation in James 2. How many will care what we have to say if they don't see any indication that we care? We are the light of the world and the city set on a hill when we live what we promote...and this will be seen in the community. Let be lights visible in our communities, a city not hidden! Ethan R. Sean Sullivan VOLUME 003::ISSUE 018:: May 04, 2008 ARTICLE ONE: Questions Every Christian Should Ask ARTICLE TWO: Time, Talent, and Treasure Article One: Truth and Assumption The ability to question or reason is solely ours; no other creature of God's creation has this ability. We question and decide many times every day. Most of our daily decisions are small and their significance is temporary. Occasionally though, we are confronted with large questions that we must study and reason through. One such "large question" that we must face and certainly requires careful study is the question of our salvation. We must question our place with God. We must ask, "Am I saved; am I doing all that I can to please Him?" The answers to these questions are found in careful examination of our life in comparison to the standard of God's word. We are exhorted to read, to study, to meditate, to give ourselves entirely to the word of God (1 Timothy 4:13. 15-16). One way of studying is simply to ask a question and then search the answer. With the two previously mentioned questions we can learn a lot by searching the Word for the answers. The Bible is full of answers to help us all the days that we live. As Christians we need to be asking questions. There may be many questions that one could ask but I think these three are a good beginning. Question: What Am I? A short answer would be two words, "a Christian". It is a short answer but it means much more than can be seen in one glance. Christians are followers of Christ. He has left behind a pathway for us that will lead us home (2 Peter 1:21-23). As I Christian I am also "a redeemed soul". I was once lost in sin; sold out, separated from God. Now, as a Christian, I have been bought back at a great price-The shed blood of the Son of God (Hebrews 9:22-28). I also may be described as "a soldier of the cross." Like soldiers we are to hold the line. Our line is the line of truth. We are trained to stand strong by the word of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). We are immoveable if we do as we are trained (Psalm 16:5-8). "The light of the world" is also a fitting description for a Christian. Jesus spoke of us being examples of good in this otherwise dark world. We are to be living examples of the effects of Christ on one's life (Matthew 5:14-16). When we shine brightly we draw other's attentions to God. Knowing what we are will help to focus on what we should be doing. Question: Can I Do More? Can I do more personally? We all have room for improvement; we need to examine our own work looking for the areas that need improvement enabling success and rejoicing (Galatians 6:4-5). The goal that shows us all that we need more is found in another question. "Am I comparable to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ?" (Ephesians 4:13). Yes, we have some room to grow and yes we can achieve this goal. Can I do more for our congregation? There are many talented members here. This does not mean that a few can do the work for all. We all need to find a role and take up our share of the load (Ephesians 4:16). We also need to train up others behind us so that the truth will be maintained for generations to come. We need to look for opportunities to do.we are all in this work together for the cause of Christ. Can I do more for others? There are many souls who need to hear the gospel. Jesus said the fields are ready for harvest (John 4:35). That is as true today as the day that He first called His disciples attention to looking out for souls in need. As Christians we have what everyone needs. We have one consistent truth (John 17:17). We have contentment in this life (Philippians 4:6-7). We have confidence in the truth to save us (Hebrews 3:14). We need to share what we have with others, it is what they are looking for; it is what they need. Knowing that our examples speak louder than words, we must live what we teach if we expect others to listen. We are to influence others by reflecting Christ (Ephesians 4:13). The gospel's effect in our life will radiate on to others. The gospel is the power of God to salvation (Romans 1:16) and the life that it leads us to is one of contentment, joy, and confident peace. These factors will influence others toward you and you will direct them toward their salvation through Jesus Christ (John 14:6). Question: Can I Be Certain of Heaven? Everyone "in Christ" can be. Those in Christ are those who have been baptized into Him (Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:4) and who have carefully maintained the relationship of "in Christ" by faithful service (Hebrews 3:12-14). Paul speaks of this continual effort (Philippians 3:13-14). Jesus Christ, Himself, speaks of our great reward being found only after our continual faithfulness (Revelation 2:10). Can we be certain of our reward? Yes, Christ promised it to His faithful-to all those who love His appearing: a crown of life (2 Timothy 4:8). Conclusion: We need to reflect on our own situation and make sure that we are doing what we need to be doing. If you are a Christian then you have. at some point, questioned your stand before God and have changed in order to please Him. This change was the answer to your question. This question was the first, but not likely the last in your relationship with God through Christ. As we grow, we should question our service and make the appropriate changes. ~tss Article Two: Time, Talent and Treasure We are certainly blessed in this life and especially in our country. We have freedoms in our lives that others in this world can only dream of having. However, like most things that we have always had: there is a tendency for this blessing of freedom to be taken for granted. There is a Biblical principle that we must hold to, in opposition to this complacency, that teaches: with greater blessings comes greater responsibility (Matthew 25:14-30). Present day, in our lives, we all have more than enough. Generally speaking we might be able to categorize what we have into three areas. Time, talents, and treasures; this is not a comparison of "who has what" or "who has more". We must simple grasp the reality that we are to use what we have to better serve God (Acts 17:27; Colossians 3:17). By laying these things out in such categories perhaps we can better see what we do have and how we need to be using what we have. Let's consider what we have and how we might use it to God's glory. We All Have Time Time is certainly our most precious-least reliable commodity. There are no guarantees when it comes to length of life; this is what makes time so precious. It has been said that "death is no respecter of persons"; both the young and old are susceptible to death. We know that no one lives forever in this world (Hebrews 9:27), so our concern is not necessarily how many days we will have, as much as how we use the ones we do have. What can we do with our time? We could waste our life on worldliness (Ephesians 4:17-23). It is amazing to me how many have accepted these sinful ways as some "right of passage" or mark of being an adult. Galatians 5:19-21-The works of the flesh are sins, not expressions of freedom or maturity. We could use our time to fulfill our greatest need. Solomon tried all that the world offered and with his wisdom beyond anyone, before or after, he concluded that man's greatest reward was in the fulfillment of these words, "Fear God and keep His commandments" (Ecclesiastes 12:13). We have one life to live: In which we must prepare for meeting God in Judgment (2 Corinthians 5:10; Hebrews 9:27). What are you doing with your time? We All Have Talents We all have talents: if you have not found yours, keep looking. We are familiar with the idea of "hidden talents". As we travel through life we occasionally discover that we have an ability that we never knew we had. Most often it is because we have not had opportunity to express that ability. If an individual stands in one spot for their entire life they will never know if they can walk: until they try-try walking. Maybe you are an "Apollos" (Acts 18:24)-able to speak well and to teach others. Maybe your role is like "Barnabus" (Acts 4:36)-you can encourage others in good works. Perhaps you are a "Dorcas" (Acts 9:36-42)-you are able to use your talent to supply other's needs. As part of a congregation we all have something to do (Ephesians 4:11-16). The growth of the body is caused by every individual member doing their share. In order for a congregation to reach its full effectiveness every member of that congregation must be working at their full effectiveness. We are to use, or express, our talents. We must, however, find the proper way of expressing them. There are two distinct areas in which we can express our abilities. Religiously: within the bounds of authority we must make sure that we are doing all that we are able to the full extent of our ability (Romans 12:4-15)-seeking to be the most effective worker for the Lord that we can be. Then also Secularly: using our talents to their fullest bearing in mind that they cannot come before our service to God. We all have some measure of talent. We need to use our talents to further our relationship with God. What are you doing with your talents? We All Have Treasures We all have treasures. There are two areas that the Bible speaks of in regard to treasures: Earthly treasures and Heavenly treasures (Matthew 6:19-21). Earthly treasures are material things, money or possessions. In and of themselves these things are neither moral nor immoral. Money is not evil-the love of money leads to evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Be warned: the love of money has caused individuals to leave the faith (Luke 12:15). Heavenly treasures are our greatest treasure. We should treasure the satisfied hope of Heaven (John 14:1-6). As we walk in this life we focus on finding Heaven as our number one priority and this is heavenly treasure. What can I do with my treasures? Always put them in their place: the Heavenly first and foremost in both your heart and your actions (Matthew 6:20-21). The earthly treasures need to be put in place only as necessary to survive and sufficient to allow us to pursue the Heavenly. We need to use what we have well. Proverbs 3:5-10 calls on us to "Honor the Lord with your first fruits". 1 Timothy 6:17-19 instructs the rich to "be rich in good works, ready to give, [and] willing to share". Stinginess is not an acceptable character trait in a Christian: cannot be a miser-miserable-and also have love, joy, and peace. Those who are able to give need to give with liberality (Romans 12:6-8) Conclusion: Each of these points can be used or abused. We can waste our lifetime away on frivolous things. We can place a higher value on talents than on pleasing God. With treasures we could certainly desire the earthly treasure more than heavenly. What will we do with our blessings of time, talent, and treasure? God wants you to be saved (2 Peter 3:9). Will you dedicate your time to His service (Matthew 6:33)? Will you use your talents to further His cause (Romans 12:6-8)? Are your earthly treasures being used to further your Heavenly treasures (Matthew 6:19-21)? God has prepared a way that we can know true success. Through His Son Jesus Christ we are given an opportunity to be freed from the bonds of sin and released to seek and serve Him with all of our ability. Will you apply yourself to that plan today? ~tss If you are enjoying The Messenger and you know someone else who would like to receive it. Jeremiah warned the kings, prophets, priests, and shepherds that God's wrath would bring them down and they would be unable to escape. He told them that they should restore justice and righteousness at the top so they could be blessed again, and stop listening to the useless messages of those who were only encouraging the adultery, and corruption. There are very practical and important lessons that we can learn from Jeremiah 21-26. Churches need to examine themselves today, from the leaders to the flock, we must deal with sin seriously, or God will deal seriously with us. Every preacher, teacher, and elder needs to consider these valuable lessons in standing in the counsel of God's word, purifying our souls and our resolve to serve God in sincerity and truth. Our own souls are at stake as well as those we lead. Listen to Jeremiah, that lonely voice of truth and love, as he reminds us today to purge out the old leaven, or a small remnant will have to start the job again. When a man will not provide for his own in all of these areas, he is "worse than an infidel". We will all give account of our stewardship. Many "Christian" homes are being destroyed by irresponsible spending habits, piling up debts (which becomes a form of stealing), and covetousness that is grounds for withdrawal of fellowship (1 Cor.5). This lesson should be downloaded and passed around to every home that needs a reminder of the stewardship of money and souls in the home. Is a family or couple you know fighting over debt problems? Turner) "The Excellence of Scripture" (Richard Thetford) SENTENCE SERMONS --- GRACE REVEALED IN THE GOSPEL Richard Thetford In C. R. Nichols Pocket Bible Encyclopedia he spells out where "grace" is found. Grace is found all through the pages of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Holy Bible! We learn from the scriptures that grace came by Jesus Christ. In John 1:17 it says: "For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." God offered His grace to man in the form of Jesus who went to the cross and died for us so that we can have forgiveness of sins. The Word of God says: "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us..."(Titus 2:11-12). We are taught about the grace of God through His inspired word (2 Tim 3:16), the Bible. Then when we obey the teachings (which includes baptism) contained within His Word, we are saved by His grace. Paul writes: "even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)" (Eph 2:5). He also wrote to the Romans: "through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God" (Rom 5:2). We learn that we get into His grace through faith. When we are obedient to Jesus (Matt 7:21), then we can rest in His grace. But we must continue to abide in His grace, being faithful always or we can fall from His grace. In Galatians 5:4 Paul writes: "You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace." We must be determined to read the gospel of Christ to gain faith, then continue in faith always to stand in His grace. --- FELLOWSHIP Robert F. Turner In 1 John 1: John describes his fellowship with God as one dependent upon his walking "in the light" of God's truth. He had learned of Christ first hand, and then wrote this truth for our benefit; so that we may have the same kind of fellowship he had, i.e., fellowship with God. There is no fellowship with God for those who walk in darkness - error and sin. But in 3 John (verses 9-10) John tells us of some of his brethren (evidently folk who had fellowship with God) who had been cast out of the church. Diotrephes had severed fellowship with them, and forbad others to have such fellowship. This was wrong, undoubtedly; but the fact remains that it could and did happen. This is a case where God maintained a fellowship which men refused. The opposite is true in 1 Corinthians 5. Here, a member of the church in Corinth (whom we conclude to have had fellowship with God at one time) now lived in immorality. According to 1 John 1: (and implied here) this man had now severed his fellowship with God. He walked in darkness. But the brethren in Corinth continued to keep fellowship with him. This too, was wrong - but it did happen. Men maintained a fellowship which God refused. Thus, two types of fellowship are apparent - that with God, depending wholly upon our walking in truth; and that with men (even brethren), which is subject to man's approval or disapproval. Saying we should approve only that which God approves (with which I agree) does not change facts. Brethren sometimes approve that which they should not - or disapprove that which they should accept. God knows the difference, and judges accordingly; but the 'party' doesn't always act as God would have it act. As we individually obey the gospel we pledge ourselves to serve God. To Him we must individually give account when life is through (Matthew 16:24; Romans 14:4, 12). Following this agreement of allegiance, and subject to these obligations, we join hands with others to work and worship together in a local fellowship, or congregation. God commands this union; the ties of this association are grand and its obligations real; but it remains the means of serving the Master, and must never become our Master. Fellowship of men with men is an earthly tie which has an acceptable religious significance only when it complements our service to God. It is given divine regulations, but men do not always follow those regulations. One who counts on the outward bond of 'church' fellowship alone to guarantee his spiritual redemption, leans on a broken reed. No, I do not depreciate the importance of the church. I seek to emphasize the meaning of the true church, as God's people, we do God's work in God's way - praised for their allegiance and service to God, rather than for their faithfulness to the 'party'. Brethren who are primarily interested in keeping their fellowship with God intact, will be drawn to one another by his common interest, and find a congregational fellowship that forecasts the sweetness of heaven. --- THE EXCELLENCE OF SCRIPTURE Richard Thetford In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 it says "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work". We can therefore know that the scriptures are profitable for sound doctrine as it says in Titus 2:1. Also that we are to continue in the doctrine of Christ (Acts 2:42), and that we are to abide In it (2 John 9-10). We can also learn from this passage of scripture (2 Tim 3:16-17), that in the area of reproof that we are not to refuse it (Prov 10:16) because it is the way of life (Prov 6:23). The scriptures are used for correction in that we are not to despise it (Heb 12:5) and they are for our own good (Heb 12:11). However there are many that do not receive it (Jer 2:30), and as a result will not inherit everlasting life with God our Father (Heb 5:9). It is only through the scriptures that we can be furnished unto all good works (2 Pet 1:3). Are you letting the "excellency of the scriptures" dwell within you today? --- SENTENCE SERMONS ""Life is a one way street and we are not coming back."
