Hello to the list,
Last night a question concerning the Lord's supper and the dismissal of worship services was presented on Mt 26:30 and Mk 14:26. Is this a binding example of what should take place after partaking the Lord's supper? His position is that we should partake of the Lord's supper, have a closing hymn and then go home. He believes that the Mt of Olives serves as the Lord's residence while he was in Jerusalem, Lk 22:39, and that Jesus was going home after the hymns. If I am not misrepresenting his thoughts this is how the close of a worship service should take place: the Lord's Supper, followed by a closing hymn and then dismissal to go home. His thought on this is that after the Lord instituted this memorial it was the last thing on the minds of the disciples and should be the center of our thoughts as we dismiss. He also believes that if we do anything other than this, i.e. closing prayer or announcements, we are adding to God's word. Quite frankly I have never heard this before last night and he is the only person I have met that believes this way. I do not think he is correct but also feel that did not I adequately answer him, therefore I am seeking your help. As we parted last night I told him that I would talk to him later this week to discuss this again.
Has anyone else faced a similar question before and how did you answer it?
Some additional questions that I am considering in helping provide an answer:
1. Several sources indicate the phrase "sang a hymn" indicated they actually sang several as was the custom to sign a selection of psalms from Ps 115-118. Is this accurate or Jewish custom?
2. Is it accurate to claim that Jesus made his dwelling place the Mt of Olives when he visited Jerusalem, based on what is said in Lk 22:39? Thus Jesus and the disciples went home immediately following the institution of the Lord's supper.
3. How does Jn 13-14 fit into the Jesus' observance of the Passover? Did this take place in the upper room where they partook of the Passover meal? Do the verses provide insight to what took place during and after the Passover meal or do they take place prior to Passover?
As I try to prepare an answer for him any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any responses to this.
Please respond to me privately or of our if our moderator believes this is better suited for the Bible Matters forum he might place it there.
