THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST
Richard Thetford
As Christians it would be so wonderful to fully possess the spirit of Jesus
Christ. The apostle Paul told the Romans "...Now if any man have not the
Spirit of Christ, he is none of his" (Rom 8:9). Therefore, we realize that
as Christians we must possess the spirit of Christ. The first question one
may ask at this point is "What kind of spirit did Christ possess?" Let's
look at many of the different types of spirit that Christ had. When we think
of Christ we often times think that He was obedient as it states in Phil
2:8. In addition Jesus was Humble (Matt 11:29), Forgiving (Luk 23:34),
Prayerful (Mar 1:35), Diligent (Luk 2:49), Sympathetic (Heb 4:14-15),
Merciful (Heb 2:17), Self-sacrificing (Matt 8:20), Pure (1 John 3:3), Loving
(John 15:13), Righteous (Matt 3:15), Patient (1 Pet 2:20-21), Uniform (Heb
13:8), Serving (Phil 2:5-6), and Non-reviling (1 Pet 2:23). I'm sure there
are many others that you could name from the scriptures but these are just a
few, enough for us to realize that the Christ we serve was perfect. We
should want and strive to have the spirit of Christ because we want to be
His. As Paul mentioned earlier, we can't belong to Christ if we don't take
on the spirit of Christ. So how can one obtain this precious spirit? By
imitating each spirit that Christ our Lord possessed. When we make a
commitment to follow Jesus we are also making a commitment to put on the
spirit of Christ. It takes a conscious, sincere effort to follow Jesus. Are
you putting on the spirit of Christ? Does He know that you are an imitator
of Him?

WHY BE BAPTIZED?
Richard Thetford
As we continue our study of God's teaching on baptism, you'll recall that
last week we discussed "What Baptism Is". This week we will look at "Why We
Must Be Baptized". God has commanded that all be baptized to be saved (Matt
28:19). Yet some men claim that baptism is not essential for salvation. We
must serve God or man, not both (Matt 6:24). We are baptized because of our
faith in God. The Hebrew writer said: "But without faith it is impossible to
please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he
is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (Heb 11:6). If we truly
believe and love God then we WILL DO what He asks of us (John 14:15). God's
Son, Jesus, said that baptism is necessary for salvation (Mark 16:15-16).
The only way that we can have all of our sins forgiven (washed away) is
through baptism (Acts 2:38; 22:16). We put on Christ through baptism (Gal
3:26-27), and are added to His body & family (1 Cor 12:13). Baptism is a
representation of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus (Rom 6:3-4).
Obedience requires us to do His will (Heb 5:9).

BELIEVING IN JESUS INVOLVES OBEYING JESUS
Lalo Enriquez
If you BELIEVE in Jesus you will eagerly HEAR His Word (John 5:24)
If you BELIEVE in Jesus you will trustingly BELIEVE ALL He teaches (John
5:25; 8:24)
If you BELIEVE in Jesus you will hurriedly REPENT of your sins (Luke 13:3,
5)
If you BELIEVE in Jesus you will openly CONFESS Him before men (Matthew
10:32-33)
If you BELIEVE in Jesus you will quickly be IMMERSED into Him (Acts 2:37-41;
Gal 3:26-27)
If you BELIEVE in Jesus you will willingly WALK in His light (1 John 1:7)
If you BELIEVE in Jesus you will gladly OBEY His EVERY command (Hebrews 5:9)
