THE DEVIL'S WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION

1 PETER 5:8-9 - TEXT

 

INTRODUCTION - This past week we recognized the anniversary of 9-11-01.  It
brings to our memory the attack on our nation which set our country on a
path of war against the terrorist.

During this war the term WMD's became very prominent.  We recognize this as
an abbreviation for weapons of mass destruction. Our lesson will not be a
political dialogue of this decision but rather will serve to remind us as
God's children that the Devil also uses WMD's in order to rob us of the
abundant life that is available to us in Christ.  

JOHN 10:10-11 - The devil is the thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy
- The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I
have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more
abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for
the sheep. 

JOHN 8:44 - The devil is a murderer, a liar, and does not stand in the truth
rather he stands in the way of truth. You are of your father the devil, and
the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the
beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in
him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a
liar and the father of it. 

1 PETER 5:8-9 - The devil has many weapons of mass destruction at his
disposal - Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks
about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him,
steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by
your brotherhood in the world.

What are some of these weapons of mass destruction used by the devil?  This
will be our topic of study in our lesson today.

 

WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION:THE DEVIL'S WMD'S

 

              I.      DECEPTION -

A.     GAL. 6:1-3 - All Satan wants is to get us to think we are faithful
when we are not because he knows this deception will destroy us.

B.     JAMES 1:21-22 - Satan does not mind us hearing the word as long as he
can deceive us to not become doers of the word.

C.     ACTS 12:21-24 - Herod was eaten up with pride because he would not
give glory to God.  He deceived himself into thinking he was indeed worthy
of such honor and praise.

D.     OBADIAH 3-4 - The Edomites thought they were invincible and could not
be conquered but they were only deceiving themselves and God brought them
down.

 

           II.      DELUSION - 

A.     2 THESS. 2:8-12 - The devil destroys many thru compromising the
truth, lies, and false doctrines.  The devil deludes us into thinking we do
not need to have the proper love of the truth.  Just as long as we
acknowledge some parts of the truth we are deluded into thinking we are OK
with God.

B.     GAL. 1:6-9 - Did Paul want the Christians in the churches of Galatia
to be deluded (troubled) and as a result follow the teachings of the
Judaizing teachers (circumcision) as an addition to the gospel.  Devil likes
to delude us into thinking the teaching of men is just as important as the
teachings of God.

C.     1 TIM. 4:1-5 - Paul warns Timothy about the deluding and compromising
doctrines of devils.

D.     2 JN. 9 - The apostle John by inspiration states that anything
different from the doctrine (teachings) of Christ is sinful.  The devil has
deluded many today into going beyond the teachings of Christ.  

         III.      DEVASTATION - 

A.     JOB 1:20-22 - Job lost everything and yet he did not blame God he
worshipped and praised his name. Today when devastation strikes in the form
of storms, fires, floods, earthquakes, horrible accidents and death of loved
ones the first thing people often do is blame God.  The devil has destroyed
many by getting them to turn on God when devastation occurs. We should not
turn away God in times such as those described but rather turn to God!!!

B.     PHIL. 4:10-14 - I.E. - Paul and the problems he faced yet he did not
allow the devil to devastate his faith.

C.     2 COR. 11:22-28 - A list of things Paul endured and did not allow his
faith to falter.

        IV.      DEGRADATION - 

A.     LEV. 18:20-24 - Satan wants man to degrade himself with sinful
conduct such as adultery, fornication, homosexuality, and bestiality which
God forbids.

B.     ROM. 1:24-32 - The devil once again deludes man into thinking that
God does not condemn these sinful practices today.  But God says they are
just as degrading today as they were when Leviticus was written by Moses.
Those who practice such deserve death!!!

           V.      DESPERATION - 

A.     PHIL. 1:20-21 - Paul had real meaning for his life but how many along
life's way lose a real purpose for living.  As a result they succumb to
desperation and out of desperation they kill others or themselves while
under the influence of drugs and alcohol.  

B.     2 TIM. 3:1-5 - Perilous times bring drastic actions - acts of
desperation.. Many have reached the point where they have no real meaning or
purpose for living and they use guns or other weapons to kill others and
often commit suicide.  I. E. Virginia Tech case - 32 dead

        VI.      DIVINATION - 

A.     GAL. 5:19-21 - The devil uses witchcraft, sorcery, occultism,
astrology, psychic influence and devil worship to destroy the souls of many.

B.     DEUT. 18:9-14 - God warned Israel about the dangers of divination.

C.     REV. 21:8 - The danger of practicing sorcery and following after the
spirit of evil is that hell will be our eternal abode.

 

 

 

      VII.      DENOMINATIONS - 

A.     ROM. 16:16-18 - Man has divided the church of our Lord by inventing
many man made churches.  These divisions are specifically opposed by Paul.
God says these divisions are wrong and do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ.
These denominations wear the wrong name, teach the wrong doctrine,
participate in the wrong worship and practice lies (perversion of truth).

B.     MATT. 15:8-9, 13-14 - In the eyes of God their efforts to please him
are in vain and they will be rooted up.

 

CONCLUSION - 

We need to be careful lest we fall prey to any of the devil's weapons of
mass destruction.

Maybe the worst weapon the devil saves just for Christians - discouragement.

Do not become discouraged and quit, give up or give in to the devil.

If we are in Christ we can stand against the wiles of the devil.  

Are you in Christ?

If you are not in Christ the devil will destroy you!

Obey the gospel today!
