Things Which Cannot Be Shaken
Heb. 12:25-28
Intro: Recipientss of Hebrew letter lived in uncertain times.
A. 3 world empires had fallen
1) Foundation of Roman gov was eroding
a. Immorality, corruption at highest levels
b. Excessive taxes, military scare tactics
2) True God was left out
a. Roman Caesars declared themselves gods
B. Things today are shaky
1) Wars & fanaticism, etc
2) Fortunes in high tech industries here one day,
gone the next
3) "Only thing constant is change!"
C. Is there such a thing as stability? If so, where can we
find it?
1) After all the shakiness of this world, Bible tells us
there are things which WILL stand.
2) Heb. 12:25-28
I. The temporary things of this shaking world
A. Vs 26 quotes Haggai 2:6
1) Prophecy of new dispensation, covenant, testament
a. Principles which would shake heaven and earth!
B. Vs 27 applies prophecy to changing & passing of earthly
things, including earth itself in contrast to the eternal
and unchanging principles of everlasting kingdom.
1) Vs 26a speaks of Mt. Sinai & its symbolization of
old covenant
2) In its place stand the things which CANNOT be shaken.
C. STILL, THERE IS UNCERTAINTY ALL AROUND US
1) Society's morals & values are changing
a. Things once in majority are now minority!
b. Things once considered sinful now accepted
& even applauded!
3) Politics are changing
a. Leaders abandoning principles our country
founded on.
b. Morality in elected leadership declining.
4) Religious world is changing
a. Denominations now vote on their doctrine!
b. Islam marches on.
II. There ARE some things which cannot change
A. THE NATURE AND CHARACTER OF GOD
"I, the LORD, do not change.." Mal. 3:6
1) His views of sin do not change
a. James 1:17
b. God's light is the knowledge or instruction of
His will
c. Unlike sun, the "quality" of His light remains
constant!
d. We can ALWAYS know where we stand with
Him.
2) It is why we can say that He is a present help.
a. Psa. 46:1-3
B. THE NATURE & CHARACTER OF CHRIST.
Heb. 13:8
1) He doesn't change because He is image of God
a. Col. 1:15, 19
2) Who better to be our head than the One on whom
we can rely?
a. 2 Tim. 2:11-13
b. Faithfulness speaks of steadfastness, integrity.
c. Simply, He is ALWAYS true to His word!
C. THE WORD OF GOD
"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not
pass away." Mark 13:31
1) God's word is inerrant, infallible, contains no mistakes
and is as absolute as God Himself.
2) Tho many try to stamp it out, revise its principles,
and ignore it altogether, it will still stand.
a. 1 Ptr. 1:22-25
3) It is alive with power!
a. "For the word of God is living and active and
sharper than any two edged sword, and
piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit,
of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the
thoughts and intentions of the heart." Heb. 4:12
4) While creed books & philosophies crumble, God's word
will not because only it has the power to save!
a. Rom. 1:16-17
D. THE KINGDOM OF GOD Heb. 12:28
1) Daniel prophesied that this would be kingdom that lasts
a. "In the days of those kings the God of heaven will
set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed,
and that kingdom will not be left for another
people; it will crush and put an end to all these
kingdoms, but will itself endure forever." Dan. 2:44
b. In an age where rulers & countries change overnight,
we can depend on quality of God's kingdom!
c. 2,000 years after established, it still abides.
2) No power, earthly or otherwise can prevail against it.
a. Matt. 16:18-19
E. THE REDEEMED SOUL
"The world is passing away and also its lusts but the one
who does the will of God lives forever." 1 John 2:17
1) Tho this life is full of trouble, we have a hope that
endures.
a. 2 Cor. 5:1-8
2) Someday our hope will be realized, our faith turned
into sight and we will ALWAYS be with Him.
a. 1 Thess. 4:16-18
Conc. In the uncertain times of this changing world, we have a
spiritual anchor that provides security.
A. Heb. 6:17-20
B. Knowing that God's promises are guaranteed and sure
should cause us to be more stable and faithful in our
own lives.
