Cost

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Introduction: A rule in economic theory is that nothing is free. Put another way we

would say, "Everything has a price." This is true in a number of other areas besides economics.

The person who lives a life of dissipation pays for it later with poor health even lifestyle-related death. Becoming involved with the wrong crowd will cost one a good reputation. There are many other possible scenarios.

Today/tonight we want to focus on how this happens in the spiritual realm.

I. The Cost Of Sin.

A. Sin is transgression of the law (1 Jn. 3:4, KJV).

1. This means any and all transgressions.

2. Penalty the same for any and all (Rom. 6:23).

B. All have sinned (Rom. 3:23).

C. Sin brings separation from God (Isa. 59:1-2).

1. Dead in trespasses and sins (Eph. 2:1).

2. Workers of iniquity apart from the Lord (Lk. 13:27).

D. The debt of sin is more than we can pay (Rom. 5:6).

II. The Cost Of Salvation.

A. The Father paid for our debt of sin.

1. He did this because He loves us (Rom. 5:8; 1 Jn. 4:9-10).

2. He did so with His Son (Rom. 8:32).

3. He gave Him for the whole world (Jn. 3:16).

B. Jesus became our payment for sin.

1. He gave up glory and majesty in doing so (Phil. 2:5-8).

2. Though rich He became poor for us (2 Cor. 8:9).

3. His blood paid for our sins (1 Peter 1:18-19).

C. "who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness; by whose stripes you were healed" (1 Peter 2:24).

III. The Cost Of Discipleship.

A. Salvation, as a gift, is freely offered.

1. It is available for all (Mk. 16:15; Matt. 28:19; Rom. 1:16; 1 Tim. 2:3-4; Rev. 22:17).

2. Yet this is not available to the recipients without cost.

B. Jesus speaks plainly about the cost of discipleship (Lk. 14:25-33).

1. This means a severing of the closest of ties.

2. It includes a "burning of all bridges."

3. This cost must be calculated in advance.

C. Paul understood the high cost of discipleship (Rom. 12:1-2; Gal. 2:20; Phil. 3:7-8).

D. Many are unwilling to pay any cost.

1. Many want a salvation that costs them nothing.

2. They want something that does not exist.

Conclusion: We can surely appreciate the matter of the first two areas of cost. However, our particular area is in the last one. Are we willing to pay the cost to be a disciple of Christ. No, salvation is not free. It never has been. Consider the gain in comparison to the cost. I think that you will agree that salvation is surely worth it all.

"Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?"
