Thou Art My Trust From My Youth

(Kent Heaton)

Across the land, young people are preparing to graduate from institutions of learning on the High School level to College. The many years of hard work are completed in the ceremonies of congratulations and presentations of papers showing the honor of what they have accomplished. Their eyes are bright with the hope of dreams forged through the years of expectation of such a day. As the rivers flow into the oceans in endless volumes, our youth take their place in the sea of humanity as pioneers of industry, leaders of community, directors of hope and guides of another generation that follow closely behind. Our young people are not only the hope of tomorrow but also the vitality of today. They represent the best of both worlds for today they look with bright eyes to what they can achieve and what they will accomplish in the future. Without a pattern to guide them, they will fail. With each generation the baton is passed and if that exchange is not done properly, mistakes will be made.

King David wrote, "In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion ... thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth" (Psalm 71:1,5). As a young man, David learned the importance of trusting in God. He also knew the trust he learned as a young man would serve him well throughout life. When David faced the giant Goliath, he told King Saul: "Your servant used to keep sheep for his father; and when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after him and smote him and delivered it out of his mouth; and if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him and killed him. Your servant has killed both lions and bears; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine" (1 Samuel 17:34-37).

Our young men and young women need this kind of faith in what God can do in their lives. When they trust in God with all their might, they will not find confusion. They will find strength - even in the face of the giants of uncertainty they will face in life. Through the power of God and the faith of His Word, the mountains that must be climbed will be conquered with true assurance and hope. Jehovah God will be their strong refuge, their help in time of trouble, and their comfort on every side.

David loved the Lord with all his might and he willingly gave praise to how the Lord had blessed his life. "O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Now also, when I am old and gray headed, O God, forsake me not; until I have showed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come. Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee" (Psalm 71:17-19). David was a man after God's own heart (Acts 13:22) because he trusted in the Lord in youth and in old age. May our young people remind us the value of trust and the blessing of hope in an everlasting God. Whom can we compare to the majesty of Jehovah God? How can we not have hope in our youth who love the Lord and praise His mighty name?
