ABOUNDING IN GOOD WORKS
Editorial by Garreth L. Clair
The Scripture encourages Christians to abound in every good work, 2 Cor 9:8, “
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having
all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:” (KJV) This
instruction is not to be left undone by the growing Christian but is surely to
be part of their daily preoccupation. Some of the areas that may be included in
this instruction, “’… abound to every good work…” are:
1. “… Abound…” –- To “abound” is to overflow, it is easy
to understand to what extent the Christian is to seek growth in good works.
The Christian ought to have a zealous inclination toward good works.
2. “… To every…” –- “To every” indicates that the
Christian ought to exclude none of the works of God as he/she contemplates growing as
a Child of God. One of the great dangers to many new Christians is their
tendency to categorize the various instructions of the Lord via the Written Word.
Some new Christians think that some instructions are more important than other
instructions from God. The simple facts about God’s instructions is that
every instruction of God to the Christian is to be
obeyed – there is no listing of God’s instructions as “non-essential” and “
essential.”
3. “…. Good…” –- The word “good” in the context indicates
that the kind of “works” in which the Christian is to “abound” are
righteous works or works authorized by the Lord. Whatever the Lord has instructed the
Christian to be or to do may be referred to as “good.”
4. “… Work…” – The word “works” in the context includes
whatever the Lord has stated for the Christian’s growth toward maturity. Some
of the works listed in the Written Word are:
A. Love God with the whole of our senses, Matthew 22:37.
B. Love one’s neighbor, Matthew 22:39.
C. Love the brethren, 1 John 3:14.
D. Prefer the company of Christians, Romans 12:10.
E. Attend worship faithfully, Hebrews 10:24-25.
F. Care for the indigent, Galatians 6:10; James 1:27.
Work for the night cometh when no one can work.
Whenever we are too old and feeble we cannot work God’s works.
Consequently, while we are able let us work, work, work!
