Here's a sermon I hope you can use. The original idea sprang from an article
by Dan Richardson.

With All My Heart
Psalm 119:33-40
Intro: We often talk about our spiritual walk in intellectual terms.
A. For instance, we place much emphasis on study
1. That's important, it's a command! (2 Tim 2:15)
2. Our mind plays a considerable role in the
"big picture" of our spirituality.
a. "I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with
the understanding, ... sing with the spirit..."
1 Cor 14:15
b. "Be careful how you walk, not as unwise men
but as wise." Eph 5:15
c. "You shall love the Lord... heart, soul, mind,
strength..." Mark 12:30
B. Same Lord also said, "Love the Lord with all your HEART"
1. Our spirituality is as much a pursuit of the heart as
it is any other part of our being.
2. There are promises and warnings associated with
our hearts.
a. Matt 5:8 Prov 4:23
C. The theme of being "whole-hearted" runs throughout
the Psalms.
1. Psalm 119:2, 10, 34, 69
2. What is whole hearted service to God and what does
it look like?
a. Our text gives us important indications.
I. I Will Persevere! – Psalm 119:33
A. No one ever starts anything with the intention of quitting.
1. Most folks start well, but finishing well is difficult.
2. In the ancient Olympic games was a torch race--
that is, a race of torch bearers--which was run at
night in honor of a god. The starting point was a
mile and a half out of the city of Athens, in the
olive grove where Plato taught. The winning-post
was within the city; and the runner who reached
it first with his torch still burning gained the prize.
B. We have a race set before us...
1. Heb 12:1
C. ... and it requires focus and determination.
1. Heb 12:2
D. Beginning is the easy part; staying the course is not.
We will never tough it out if our hearts are not in it.
1. 1 Tim 4:8
II. I Will Delight! – Psalm 119:35
A. To delight is to derive some pleasure; pleasure is
linked to our perception of value.
1. The world delights in the sensual pleasures
because of its value system.
B. For lovers of God, our delight comes from the
pleasure derived from His guidance.
1. What value does God's word hold for you?
a. Psalm 19:7-11
2. Notice that there is "reward" in keeping them.
a. Everything has a payday:
(1) "The wages of sin is death." Rom 6:23
3. In this world, Christians are perceived as losers, weak.
a. But whatever we "lose" here is our gain now & later.
(1) "I count all things to be loss in view of the
surpassing value of knowing Christ my
Lord..." Phil 3:8a
4. Where do your affections lie?
a. "Where your treasure is, there your heart will
be also." Matt 6:21
III. I Will Discern and Turn! – Psalm 119:34a, 36-37
A. First, I must realize God is smarter than I am.
1. " For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither
are your ways ... For as the heavens are higher
than the earth..." Is 55:8-9
2. "Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
whoever is discerning, let him know them. For the
ways of the LORD are right, and the righteous will
walk in them, but transgressors will stumble in them."
Hosea 14:9
B. For this reason I must learn to trust Him.
1. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not
on your own understanding. In all your ways
acknowledge Him and He will make your paths
straight." Prov 3:5
C. This is not "blind faith" nor does it excuse us from our part.
1. Discerning and turning comes from the acquired
ability to distinguish right from wrong, necessary
and unnecessary, based on God's word.
a. Eph 5:17
2. It stems from our diligent application of it.
a. Heb 5:13-14
IV. I Will be Established and Confident! – Psa 119:38-40
A. Such confidence will spring directly from the reverence we
have for God.
B. Consider the men & women of Heb 11 (see vv 32-38)
1. They stood strong in the face of unimaginable
adversity. Why? They believed God!
C. We NEED confidence!
1. Heb 13:5-6, 1 Pet 5:7, 2 Tim 1:7, 1 John 4:18
2. He will bear our fears and anxieties and produce in
us consistency and assurance in our service
Conc: Let us be devoted to God with all our hearts, serving
Him with assurance and being revived in His righteousness!
A. YOUR attitude and actions will make the difference.
1. Will you persevere, delight, discern & turn, and be
established & confident?
B. INV
