Brethren and Friends, Jim Sasser here. A very good Saturday
morning to each and everyone. May God bless you and yours.
Here is an article that recently came my way:
GOD HAS SPOKEN
Modesty in behavior, dress, and speech is the expected
conduct of every Christian (1 Tim. 2:8-10; 1 Pet. 3:1-8; Col. 4:
5,6). Such modesty is a learned behavior, taught by godly
saints whose aim is to help people to live soberly righteously,
and godly in this present world (Ti. 2:1-14). Such teaching is
a service of high importance; for it sets forth the newness of
life that Paul describes in Rom. 6. He also taught in 2 Cor. 5:
17, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old
things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
Society or the community in which one lives does not esta-
blish the standard for Christians. Those who are of the world
are a standard to themselves, and that standard is as fluid as
the mores of society are. They range from moderate restraint
to extreme license. Over the past fifth years license has be-
come more and more prevalent and more extreme.
We have reached the time of year when so many people
are wearing little clothing. Men and women want to show off
their bodies, and seem unconcerned that they may be contri-
buting to the sin of lust, which leads to fornication (Jas. 1:13-
16). Christians too often blind themselves to the shame of
immodesty, and even contend that the swimming pool or
beach justifies almost complete nudity. They argue in favor
of the prom and other occasions of dancing, which involve
immodest dress, lewd and sensual behavior and often the consumption of
alcoholic beverages. "Love not the world,
neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the
world, the love of the Father is not in him." Whether it is "the
lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes," or "the pride of life,"
such conduct is of the devil (1 Jno. 2:15-17). Don't let the de-
sire for conformity destroy your soul! This article has only
begun to deal with this sin in all of its forms of behavior, dress, and
speech. "Therefore do not be unwise, but under-
stand what the will of the Lord is" (Eph. 5:17). ---- Gilbert
